PlusSizeClothes.net

Plussizeclothes.net’s layout was created in approximately 4 hours, including the header, layout, fonts, colors, widgets, etc. Studiopress is coming out with some amazing themes, especially if you’re interested in magazine style layouts for your website. They are more complicated than Elegant Themes, but if you’re looking to build out a thick site with many features and sections, then it really is the way to go. Using it, the site was up and running in a matter of hours with a professional style site.

Once the header was created, the only thing left to do is to start generating more content and publishing it in a place where it would be accessible. Any feedback on the site’s layout and design is welcome.

99 Designs – Get Inspired

The first time I came across 99Designs.com, I was blown away by what I saw. Not only are their prices reasonable, I like to peruse what’s been submitted as it gives me inspiration and ideas to incorporate into my designs as well. I think the concept of designers submitting their proposal is great. However, the one complaint is that designers are not going to go through too much trouble to create something that has a low chance of being selected. So, what ends up happening is a designer will take something he or she has done before, and tweak it a little based on the proposal’s specs.

I think it works for sites where you want something nice up and running pretty quick, and am not too worried about it looking generic. If you’re building a serious brand though, I’d probably go a different route.

Creating a Favicon

No need to struggle with Photoshop or any of the other image editing software. Unless, you’re having a web designer do it, you can save yourself some money and create a simple one yourself. I tried www.favicon.cc and it works perfectly well enough. What’s nice is that it even shows you the favicon you’re creating right on the brower tab so you can see what it will look like. Pretty nice! BTW, the favicon on this website was created using it. Took about 5 minutes, which includes ftp-ing it to the site and clearing cache for it to appear.

WineGuppy: E-commerce Done Right

The frontpage for this e-commerce site was designed specifically to allow the user to view 3 key factors:

  1. A sample suite of product images to inform the visitor of what this site sells
  2. Quickly reassure the potential customer that free shipping is available long with a money back guarantee
  3. Access to a guide to help the customer figure out what to buy

WineGuppy The Category page is typical of many pages on the site. It has the top nav bar, and select testimonials, payment options and security seals.

Volusion’s Hosted Shopping Cart

WineGuppy E-Commerce Site

WineGuppy E-Commerce Site

My first e-commerce site. I worked with a Volusion designer to come up with the overall look and feel, along with the layout.

What I like:

  • Images of the category items right on the home page. This gives the users an idea of what is being sold on this site
  • Clear boxes on the value-adds: free shipping, satisfaction guarantee, wine accessory guide, customer testimonials, bestsellers.
  • Great layout and color selection

What I didn’t like

  • javascript top nav bar! Not accessible to spiders
  • Footer looks like an afterthought. It was!
  • The flash image of sample products for each category looks clunky. (It was added 6 months after go-live)
  • Logo is a little simple. Not in a memorable way, but almost looks like an afterthought. It needs to be bolder.
